Team caps off historic season by winning MX1, MX2 and Superfinal at Olympic Stadium
Kamloops, BC(Oct 2, 2012) The 2012 Canadian season reached it’s traditional end this past weekend as the annual Monster Energy Supermotocross took place inside the confines of Montreal, Quebec’s Olympic Stadium. For the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki team it was one last chance to stamp an exclamation point on what has been a historic season for the Kamloops, BC team who dominated both the MX1 and MX2 classes in the Monster Energy CMRC Nationals this past summer with Matt Goerke and Teddy Maier, respectively.
With newly crowned MX2 champ, Maier, joining his teammate and defending Montreal winner, Goerke in the MX1 class, the team needed a rider to compete in the all-Canadian MX2 race to fill in for the injured Kyle Beaton. Coming off a successful rookie season in AMA Supercross and Motocross, Brigden, Ontario’s Cole Thompson was able to step in and ride the KX250F for the team and he didn’t disappoint. Fastest in practice, Thompson won his heat race with ease and in the main event, quickly worked his way into the lead and with a fast lap over a second quicker than anyone else, rode off to take his first Montreal victory. Thompson was understandably happy after his race, “ Man, this is awesome! I’m so glad I could repay the team’s faith in me and get this win. The bike is awesome and it’s just been a great weekend overall.”
Right from the start of practice, there was little doubt that defending Montreal champ and current Canadian National champ, Goerke, was the man to beat as he consistently logged the quickest lap times in both practice sessions. In the main event he got a good start, quickly worked his way to the front and checked out, riding off to a commanding win as he took his second straight victory in Montreal. Behind him, his teammate Maier, who’d won his heat race earlier in the night, was in a vicious battle for the final podium spot but would have to settle for 4th.
With the MX1 and MX2 classes decided, the racing wasn’t over for the night though, as new for 2012 was a Superfinal, featuring the top 10 riders from both classes. Just as in the MX1 main event, Goerke made quick work of the field and rode off to another win, in what has been one of the most dominant seasons in Canadian history. This time, Maier would join him on the podium as he battled his way to 3rd and finishing just behind Maier in 4th would be none other than Thompson on his 250F in one of the best rides of the night.
Goerke was quite happy to finish his season off on a high note: “After last summer’s struggles, I thought that my Montreal win really turned around my season and set me up for the great year I had this year. I’m glad I could come back and have an even better night tonight, with the addition of the Superfinal. I’m so thankful for how much work the team put in this year to allow me to have such a dream season!”
And with the final checkered flag, the team wraps up its dream 2012 season. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this year such a historic one for the team.
